Grid Bikes! What Are Those Green Bikes On Main St?

Grid bike 1Grid bikes! They have arrived on Main St. You will see 250 of these bright green two-wheelers in racks along Main St, ready for pedalists to explore Downtown Mesa, head to work, check out a Spring Training game or go wherever their hearts desire (that’s within biking distance!)

The most common usage is for folks who take the light rail to destinations that are just a little far to walk once you reach the light rail stop. Having a bike to take you that last mile or two can greatly increase the benefits of our light rail here in Metro Phoenix.

There are several racks of Grid Bikes along Main Street – near each light rail stop, adjacent to Benedictine University and EVIT, in Pioneer Park, adjacent to El Rancho del Arte, and various points among the shops and museums in Downtown Mesa.

The grid bikes are networked throughout Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix, particularly long the light rail system so you can extend the light rail trip beyond the tracks without hauling your bike aboard the train. Cool, huh?

GridBike3Here’s how it works…

Each rack includes a charge system to registers the bike’s location and charges the monitor.  Each bike has a keypad that allows you to “log in”. You can create an account online at gridbikes.com and pay for whatever membership best suits your needs:

Monthly Basic: $15 per month – gets you 60 minutes of usage per day

Monthly Plus: $20 per month – gets you 90 minutes of usage per day

Student: $25 per semester (.edu email address required)

Pay As You Go: $7 per hour

To reserve a bike, you can use the Grid Bike mobile app, or reserve on the web at app.socialbicycles.com, or at the bike using its keypad. You may rent up to four bikes at a time. Each additional bike is charged at the hourly rate.

Once you’ve reserved a ride, just enter your 4­-digit PIN code on the keypad to unlock the bike. Here’s what is really cool. If you want to stop off somewhere, you can press the “HOLD” button and lock the bike to a rack. Just enter your 4­-digit PIN to unlock and continue riding. This means that 60 minutes is just for the time you actually use the bike.

GridBike2To end your trip, just lock your bike at one of our convenient hub locations or, if that’s not handy at any regular bike rack for a small additional fee. It’s that simple!

The power of enabling one-way trips rather than a forced round trip due to having a personal vehicle is transformative. Bike share opens up mobility options that weren’t previously convenient and makes public transit more viable.
