Here in Phoenix, there are at least 12,200 families today who are watching their homes be sold by the bank. There are another 15,000 who are trying to sell their home before the bank forecloses on them, too. About 30,000 additional families are just waiting for the bank to knock on their door and tell them to move on. And there are many others who are in danger of becoming one of these statistics. This is a very tough time for many families, myself included, and it is very easy to become overwhelmed by the stress.
On a day when I was really feeling the pressure, I came across a great blog called Love In the Time of Foreclsoure (LITTOF) This blog chronicles the journey of “TWO PEOPLE DEEP IN DEBT, WORKING OUR WAY OUT AND HAPPIER THAN WE EVER HAVE BEEN”. It is very cool and reminded me that there is more to life than money troubles.
I can certainly relate to the pressure that comes from being one of these housing crunch statistics. I divorced in 2006 and bought my house that year…no surprise I am upside down on my mortgage. Like many people, my income has been negatively affected by the economy so I have had some sleepless nights worrying about my bills.
This blog, LITTOF, reminded me that even though it’s tough right now, your bank account does not determine whether or not you’re happy. It also reminded me that although we cannot control what happens to us, we can control how we react to those events.
So, in a nutshell, here are three things you can do to prevent a little foreclosure trouble from ruining your day:
ASK FOR HELP: There are a lot of resources out there to help people who are having trouble making thier mortgage payments. Don’t feel like you have to go this alone! Ask for help and ask early!
TAKE ACTION: Only 30% of families facing foreclosure take action. The rest just wait for the bank to take over their home. That’s really unfortunate because with so many resources available, there are many options for you that might prevent foreclosure. Empower yourself and set a course for how you are going to deal with the situation. Don’t be a victim…be a survivor.
KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE: One of the most important messages I got from the LITTOF blog was that there is a lot more to life than money problems. These people are really happy! And you and I can choose to behappy too. You know what they say…when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
These are tough times for many people but it isn’t going to last forever. Hang in there!
I am a Realtor in Gilbert, AZ, working with clients throughout the Phoenix Metro area. I am lucky to love what I do and appreciate the difference I can make in people's lives.
In a previous life, I was a rocket scientist - really! - but decided to step away from corporate America to be a Mom to my four boys. Found it hard to do bake sales, so I ran a small independent programming business instead.
Flash forward...I am now a single mom and I face many, many challenges everyday. I am living through the hardships that many are facing in this economy. These experiences have motivated me to help other people in my shoes.
I have teamed up with Dean Ouellette to form the East Valley Team - the best darn team in the Valley. Check out our site at http://www.EastValleyTeam.com. I spend way too much time on YouTube - check ou tmy channel at http://www.youtube.com/klavanway
